Does the Board know the Story?

Remember your history,

your long and rich history.

I am GOD, the only God you’ve had or ever will have—

incomparable, irreplaceable— Isaiah 46:9 MSG

When working with a new client, one of the first assignments I ask of them is to learn the history of the organization they are leading. It is amazing to me how few leaders take the time to discover the story. Their focus is so far on the future, and they forget to honor the past as well.

Even if the executive director learns the history, the board and staff do not know it all. Each of us is standing on the shoulders of those who came before us. Over and over again, God told His people to tell their children what He had done for them. The same is true in these organizations. We must communicate and share the story.

If your first thought is that you assume your board knows the story, take time at the next meeting, and refresh their memory. You will be surprised at how many of them have forgotten bits of it or needed a reminder. After all, we are in the organization daily, and they are leading businesses, working jobs, and leading families. They may need a refresher course.

I hope this information is practical and helpful. All of our mentors offer board training that stands apart offering not only the role of the board but also how to bring God into the Board room and how to lead through a crisis situation. Reach out to one of us today to learn how we help!

Blessings,

Ashley Graves
